Bo Tan

Bo Tan received the B.Sc. degree in communications engineering in 2004 and the M.Sc. degree in circuits and systems in 2008 from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Beijing, China. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Digital Communications from The University of Edinburgh, UK, in 2013. He became a research associate with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University College London in 2012. His research includes signal processing for radio signals in communications and radar systems, relays and MIMO in communications, wireless sensor networks, indoor positioning with opportunistic signals. He has also worked for startups and telecommunications operators on hardware design and commercial development. Bo was on secondment through the BITE Industry Exchange Award Scheme at u-blox, a leading provider of wireless and positioning modules, working on technical solutions and the business/marketing strategy for new indoor positioning solutions. Upon completion of his secondment, Bo continued working as a researcher in indoor positioning systems and is currently working on the SPHERE project at the University of Bristol. Bo has also maintained close links with UCL, where he is currently a visiting scholar.

Bowei Chen

Bowei Chen is a completing PhD student in the Department of Computer Science at University College London. His research lies mostly in online digital markets and derivatives evaluation. His thesis studies financial models to solve the non-guaranteed delivery (GD) problem in online advertising. Bowei was on secondment through the BITE Industry Exchange Award Scheme at MediaGamma, a new company that brings advanced technologies into the online display advertising market. MediaGamma offers a futures and options trading platform, solving the non-GD problem and creating a newly-automated market that pre-sells the premium display ads. Upon completion of his secondment, Bowei continued his relationship with MediaGamma by helping them prepare funding proposals to extend the state-of-the-art work carried out at the company.

Edward Challis

Edward Challis is a researcher, educator and consultant of machine learning methods in both academia and industry. Edward is passionate about developing and improving data-centric technologies that will improve the way we live. Edward graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and an MSc in Artificial Intelligence. Having spent two years working for a large European hedge fund, he returned to academia to gain a PhD in Machine Learning at UCL. His research has focused on scaling probabilistic and Bayesian Machine Learning techniques to solve large automated and sequential decision making problems. Edward was on secondment through the BITE Industry Exchange Award Scheme at Skimlinks, a web start-up delivering affiliate marketing technology services. Upon completion of his secondment, Edward continued his relationship with Skimlinks working with them on a part-time basis as a Data Scientist.

Frank Tutu

Frank Kwame Tutu received his MEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from UCL in 2009. He joined the UCL Molecular Beam Epitaxy Group in March 2010 as a PhD student, to work on the fabrication of III-V Quantum Dot Intermediate Band Solar Cells. He has a broad interest in photonics and energy technologies. He has authored and co-authored a number of journal papers in solar cells and lasers. In 2012 Frank was a JSPS Fellow at the Research Centre for Advance Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo, Japan. Frank was on secondment through the BITE Industry Exchange Award Scheme at Fibercore until September 2014 working in technical customer support on specialty optical fibers. Upon completion of his secondment, Frank was offered a position at Fibercore as Development and Project Engineer.

George Smart

George Smart joined the Electronic & Electrical Engineering department of University College London in September 2007 when he started his undergraduate master’s degree. Upon completion of his degree, he stayed with the department, joining the Communications and Information Systems group, where he is currently working towards a PhD on energy-aware MAC protocols for wireless sensor networks under the supervision of Dr Yiannis Andreopoulos. His research interests go beyond wireless sensor networks to span various areas, including embedded systems software and firmware, digital signal processing and hardware design. George was on secondment through the BITE Industry Exchange Award Scheme at ARM working on low power communications. Upon completion of his secondment, George returned to UCL to finish his PhD with the potential of returning to ARM as a full-time employee having submitted his thesis.
